Why honey and not syrup

Every daily supplement needs a carrier: something that holds the active ingredients, makes them palatable and gets them down. That carrier is usually the largest thing in the product by weight, and it is the part nobody reads.

The common choices are glucose syrup, maltodextrin, sugar syrup or honey. On an ingredients list they occupy one line each. In the laboratory they do not behave the same.

Honey is not just sugar

By weight honey is mostly glucose and fructose, which is why it is often written off as sugar with better marketing. But honey also contains non-digestible oligosaccharides: short chains of sugars that human enzymes cannot break down, so they arrive in the lower gut intact and become food for bacteria living there.

Glucose syrup does not contain them. Neither does table sugar.

What the studies compared

Researchers isolated the oligosaccharides from honey, removed the glucose and fructose, and fermented what was left with human faecal bacteria. The result was a prebiotic index of 3.38 to 4.24, increasing populations of bifidobacteria and lactobacilli, though not to the level reached by fructo-oligosaccharides, a purified prebiotic used as the benchmark (Sanz et al., Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2005, PMID 15826039).

An earlier study made the comparison the label question actually turns on. Counts of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus plantarum increased ten to a hundred times more with honey than with sucrose in laboratory culture, and rats fed honey showed significantly higher lactic acid bacteria counts than either control or sucrose-fed animals (Shamala et al., Letters in Applied Microbiology, 2000, PMID 10849275).

A 2022 review from researchers at Sydney summarised the position as increasing evidence from laboratory, animal and pilot human studies that some kinds of honey have prebiotic activity (Schell et al., Frontiers in Nutrition, 2022, PMID 35967810).

The honest limit

Almost all of this work is in vitro, in animals, or in faecal cultures outside the body. A 2026 review put it plainly: the vast majority of the evidence comes from those settings, with a severe shortage of high-quality human intervention studies (Yang et al., Foods, 2026, PMID 42587978).

So the fair statement is that honey contains prebiotic oligosaccharides and behaves differently from syrup in laboratory studies of gut bacteria. It is not a claim that eating honey does a specific thing to your gut, and anyone telling you otherwise is ahead of the evidence.

The other reason, which is not scientific at all

Children take things that taste good. A carrier that has to be disguised, chased with juice or negotiated over does not get taken on day forty, whatever it contains.

Honey has been the first sweet thing children taste in most cultures for thousands of years. That is not a health claim. It is the practical reason a daily routine survives contact with a real household.

One rule, though, and it is absolute: honey is never given to babies under twelve months.
