Acerola: the cherry that is mostly vitamin C
Acerola is a small red cherry from a shrub that grows across the Caribbean, Central America and northern South America. Almost nobody eats it as fruit. It bruises within days of picking and does not travel, so outside the places it grows it is almost always encountered as a powder.
It is used for one reason: it is among the most concentrated natural sources of vitamin C known.
Why it is picked before it ripens
This is the detail that explains most of what is odd about acerola.
The vitamin C content is at its highest when the fruit is still green, and falls as it ripens and reddens. So a crop grown for vitamin C is harvested green, against every instinct of ordinary fruit growing, and processed quickly, because the compound degrades with heat, light and time.
That is why acerola powder is expensive relative to synthetic ascorbic acid, and why the handling between the tree and the packet matters so much.
Whole fruit against a single molecule
Synthetic ascorbic acid is vitamin C and nothing else. It is chemically identical to the vitamin C in fruit, it is cheap, and it works. Nobody serious argues otherwise.
The difference with a whole-fruit source is what comes with it. Acerola powder carries the fruit's other constituents, including its polyphenols and carotenoids, because it is a dried fruit rather than an isolated compound.
The honest position is that this is a difference in composition, not a demonstrated difference in outcome. If someone tells you whole-fruit vitamin C is absorbed better or works better, ask which trial showed it. What can be said plainly is that one is a fruit and the other is a molecule, and a label that names the fruit is telling you where the vitamin came from.
Why vitamin C is one of the few settled stories
Most ingredients in this category come with caveats. Vitamin C does not, and it is worth appreciating how unusual that is.
It is an essential nutrient, meaning the human body cannot make it and must take it in. Its roles are established rather than proposed. Recommended intakes for children are set by national authorities rather than argued over: in Australia, 35 mg a day for children aged one to eight, and 40 mg a day from nine to eighteen.
Those are small numbers, which surprises people. Vitamin C deficiency is rare in a varied diet. Where it becomes a real question is when a diet is genuinely narrow, which is a different article.
What to look for
If a product names acerola rather than vitamin C, that tells you the source. If it gives the milligrams of vitamin C delivered rather than only the milligrams of acerola powder, that tells you the amount, which is the number that matters. Powder weight and vitamin content are not the same thing, and only one of them is useful.
