Tart cherry and sleep: what the research actually measured

Tart cherry appears in more evening products than almost any other fruit. The research behind it is real, and it is narrower and more mixed than the shelf suggests: small early studies using juice by the glass, and two recent trials that found nothing at all.

What the early trials found

The most carefully measured positive result comes from a small crossover study in adults over fifty with insomnia. Participants drank 240 mL of tart cherry juice twice a day for two weeks. Sleep time measured by polysomnography, the laboratory method rather than a questionnaire, increased by eighty-four minutes, and sleep efficiency improved on a standard sleep index (Losso et al., American Journal of Therapeutics, 2018, PMID 28901958).

Eighty-four minutes is a striking number. Eight people completed the study. Both facts are true at once and neither should be dropped.

An earlier crossover trial in fifteen older adults with chronic insomnia found a significant reduction in one measure, minutes awake after falling asleep, and no improvement against placebo in time taken to fall asleep, total sleep time or sleep efficiency. The authors described the effects as moderate and in some cases negligible, and well below what sleep medication or cognitive behavioural therapy achieve (Pigeon et al., Journal of Medicinal Food, 2010, PMID 20438325).

What the two most recent trials found

This is the part that has changed, and it is not in most of the marketing.

A 2024 randomised crossover trial gave thirty-four adults with sleep problems tart cherry capsules or placebo an hour before bed for fourteen days, measuring sleep both objectively and by questionnaire. There were no significant effects on any measure (Tucker et al., Nutrients, 2024, PMID 39683518).

A 2026 trial went further and tested both forms: forty-four participants took either two 240 mL bottles of juice a day or two powdered capsules a day, against placebo, for thirty days. There were no significant differences in sleep time or quality between the groups. The authors note plainly that their results conflict with the earlier work (Hillman et al., Nutrition and Health, 2026, PMID 35790450).

Why the form matters

The early positive studies all used juice or concentrate in servings you would notice drinking. A review of twenty-nine human cherry studies put typical intakes at somewhere between forty-five and 270 cherries a day (Kelley et al., Nutrients, 2018, PMID 29562604).

The two recent null trials are the ones that tested capsules and powder, which is a different form at a different concentration. That is worth knowing when any product cites tart cherry sleep research: the positive results came from glasses of juice, and where a concentrated form has been tested against placebo, it has not reproduced them.

What has not been studied at all

No trial of tart cherry for sleep in children was found. Every study above is in adults, and in most of the positive ones the participants were over fifty and had a sleep problem to begin with.

The fair summary

Tart cherry has a handful of small early studies in older adults drinking juice, and two more recent controlled trials, both larger than the strongest positive one, that found no effect. Anyone citing tart cherry sleep research without mentioning the second half of that sentence is telling you half the story.
